Island, a beautiful coral atoll in the Great Barrier Reef is an
Australian
National Park sanctuary for nesting turtles and birds. The beautiful encircling reef is decorated with coral and abounds with sea life providing snorkeling and diving treats. A secluded place to find the meaning of life. No cars, no shops; you take everything by barge - even your own water. Camping out under the Southern Cross is heavenly. Himself (a.k.a. my husband Dave) has organized many barge trips and watching the nesting turtles nest is a highlight of my life.
One perfect night; the stars were skinny dipping in the gentle water caressing the coral reef. I was the only one awake on the island. The others were sleeping and the lullaby of baby birds was soothing me, after a glorious day in paradise. My company for the evening, was a mother turtle, a huge loggerhead, she was busy dropping her eggs in the pure white sand, following an instinctive nesting ritual.
Soon the mutton birds would take flight at break of day – transforming from clumsy nesting birds to stealth bombers, searching for ocean treats to bring home to their babies nesting underground. As I settled into the soft sand, trying to count the stars in the Milky Way, I was hit in the head! The turtle was busy digging sand to cover her eggs and her powerful actions had shot a missile at me! After I recovered (I still have the scar) I picked up the offending weapon.
