Young ladies, approx 18-20 years attended a four day mosaic workshop spread out over 4 consecutive Thursdays May/June 2009.
Sandy and Jenny from Othilas met to discuss the opportunity for these young women to make a mosaic project together.
What Does Othila's Mean?
Othila's (Oh-thee-la's) is named after the rune 'OTHILA'. Runes are an alphabet of symbols used by the Nordic tribes of Northern Europe around the 2nd Century.
Runes can have many meanings. OTHILA is about feeling secure in your home or dwelling. It also relates to a sense of belonging and being part of a community, it is about sharing the collective wisdom that we all possess and pass on to one another.
The project: make a wall mural for the outer fence of Othilas.
Objective: the participants learn to create, mosaic, share and grow together in a safe, caring and productive environment at OzMosaics. Provision for care of young babies and children was easily sorted at OzMosaics.
How?
Sandy taught mosaics on mesh - the butterflies were created. Cutting and shaping skills were honed using mosaic vitreous tile.
Mosaic grids were used to make the background of sky and houses. This was fun and took more work than it looks. Making clouds out of squares took some thought!
The trees are lovely. Black grout enhances the mural and will stop grout looking dirty over the years.
Othilas business card was used to inspire the centrepieces of the 3 ladies. Mosaic mouths were made out of thinset and Sandy's plastic moulding method. It was great fun and everyone enjoyed learning this process.
