Maureen Randolph - mosaic artist (and daughter Kate)
Maureen has been by my mosaic side for so long - through thick and thinset!
We have worked together on some amazing mosaic projects. We have got lost together in the mosaic wilderness (remember the story Maureen the day we overshot the mark and landed almost in Toowoomba........) Mosaic memories are as precious and lasting as the mosaics themselves.
Maureen is not tall, but that always surprises me as she seems to be able to reach the mosaic stars when it comes to imagination, energy and a capacity to out-do, out-cut and last the distance on some daunting mosaic adventures. No matter what mosaic ideas we cook up, she is able to run with it and with great finesse!
Never one to say die, we have spent many long, mosaic nights in the studio, partners in mosaic crime, exploring uncharted thinset water and bottles full of top secret grout recipes. The secrets, the laughs, the naughtiness, the discoveries…the wonderment of looking at the clock and thinking "it can't be 2am!)..... Drinking copies amounts of tea seems to be constant with us.
Maureen is the best friend you could have, always excited, happy to run with whatever is on the mosaic agenda, whilst finding time to laugh, cry and move on, when we have to. Life is full of froth and bubbles, but two things stand like stone, kindness in another's trouble and courage in your own. Maureen lives to care. She finds time for so many people and is generous to boot. She is very funny and she can also cook!
When I first met Maureen, she was seeking mosaics as an interest and now many, many years later she has grown into a very talented mosaicist, able to assist with workshops, mosaic experiments and makes fabulous art for customers and her own home and garden. It's been a constant joy to have such a great mosaic mate!
We have been out there - to Grafton ArtsFest, the schools, gigantic chairs, murals, did I mention artist-in-resident programs? She is so efficient and gets in and gets the job done without fuss. I am so lucky. Just thinking of the Steve Irwin Mural Tribute, brings a smile and a huge wave of thanks from me; Maureen helped document the huge, constantly growing pile of mosaics from around the world - it was no mean feat! I would never have done it without her.
She, Shirley and Mum in the very early days of the project were the heart of this very special project. ....and then to the mosaic rescue came Jan, Annie, Val, Wendy, Margaret, Dr Des, Pam, dozens of other helping hands and a wave of heart-felt emotion around the world. It was the mosaic experience of a life-time and Maureen was there from the start to the finish. Polly worked tirelessly behind the scenes as did my mother....those phone calls were mosaic marathons! Read the story about so many mosaic magical moments, throughout the website.
To say Maureen inspires me, is a given, to say she is special is a given, but to be lucky enough to be her friend and share the wonderful world of mosaics is never taken for granted. I thank her husband John and daughter Kate, for all the times she has been immersed in my projects, at the studio and out in the mosaic field. They are proud of her achievements - we all are and I look forward to the next year with great anticipation and excitement.
When friendship and mosaics meld - it's so special and so much fun. To know you art is giving pleasure to many and will be around for a long time is very emotional - the spirit of mosaics - it’s so special.
