Just the usual tools – glass scorer, Leponitt cutters of course, and scoring pliers (can’t tell you how many times I had the things upside down and couldn’t figure out why the glass wasn’t snapping – lots of senior moments there).

Donna - No one assisted me with the creation of my particular mosaics, although they did give me feedback.  However, my husband and 5 children created their own mosaic along with me.   Everyone got involved in the preparation process to make our mosaics.  My husband and I set up the dining table for our work surface and taped down everyone’s designs under the plastic.  The children helped prepare the glass.  See question below.

No children assisted me as we do not have children. However, Chris’s two young nephews Gregory and James (13 and 12) watched me for a while and I asked if they would like to try mosaic. Their response was most enthusiastic so I set them up in the studio. I did give them the option of doing their pieces on mesh but they preferred to make them as wall hangings for home. We drilled holes into ceramic tiles and strung picture wire through the holes before they started so their finished pieces could be hung and they had a great time gluing down ceramic tile chattering away to themselves. It was great company while I worked on my piece. A couple days later we grouted their masterpieces and it was satisfying for me to see their faces light up at the change grout can make to a mosaic. I regret not taking pictures of the pieces as they were very good for a first try.

Donna - It took me about 2 weeks to make my 3 mosaics.   Because I was helping the others, I didn’t start on mine until everyone else was done.   The kids all came down with a bad cold for several weeks and that stopped production for a while.   But, generally, the boys took about 2 weeks of working off and on to complete their mosaics.  My husband blew us all away and created his butterfly in 2 or 3 days.  My daughter did her flamingo in an afternoon.   My 4yo played around with a few designs, but the elephant is the only one I finished for him and submitted for the mural.

Carolyn - ? WAY too long; much time was spent doubting myself and worrying about whether Terri would ever recognize Malina, if she would remember her, if it would matter, if I was ruining Malina's splendid face, and taking out and redoing each part probably at least three times...all in all, I started in early November and finished in late January. 1st mosaic, The Australian Pelican was completed over many weeks as this was my1st glass mosaic.  Many hrs converting my photo to a line drawing then scale up by drawing on a Grid, found  the drawing  wasn’t exactly suited to the tesserae but I continued gluing tile to the mesh & correcting the design as it progressed. One color unavailable so discovered glass to complete the beak & smalti to convey some kind of detail to the eye.

2nd project The Ulysses butterfly only took a weekend to glue & a few hrs to design a template

3rd mosaic The Emerald Tree Boa. Designed with a book on how to draw animals, a few hrs to sketch & enlarge. My photo from Melbourne zoo of 2 Emerald Tree Boas was used as a reference to change the design. Two solid days of wet season rain and many more hours again with slight changes to the design as tiles were laid.
