Checked out the Aust Zoo web site.  The cheetah face that I did was from a photo of Cleo on the web site.  Then it was just a general zoom around the stained glass sites.

Had wanted to do this project for some time. It just seems right to do a colourful character as a tribute to Steve Irwin.

Donna Coogan & Family

USA

Donna (mosaic artist) - I spent a lot of time googling the creatures my family wanted to mosaic to find a drawing they liked.  I read about Eastern Gray Squirrels on the Internet.

John (husband) - I wanted a butterfly that looked like it was flying. The biggest research was locating an appropriate picture to use as a starting point. Nipping tile was a new experience also. I just had to practice that for a while.

Seth (19yo) – none

Laryssa – (17yo) I looked at a statue of a flamingo that I own.

Cory (12yo) - I looked at the back of a box turtle I found in the yard.  They have 4 orange spots.

Shane (9yo) – Comment by Donna - we researched black racer snakes when we saw one in the yard over a year ago, so already knew quite a bit about them – it was Shane’s inspiration, because he remembered being the first one to spot it in the yard. They coil and rattle their tail just like a rattlesnake when they feel threatened.  It even sounds like a rattle snake (we heard it!).

I started looking through books here at home on wildlife as well as referring to ancient Greek mosaics. I checked the internet but he most inspiring bit of information came from a photo in the March 2007 National Geographic. Photographer Michael Nichols set up cameras for animals to take self-portraits and there was a great pic of a crocodile’s tail – very prehistoric.

Google Images search – “cheetah” +art, +diagram, +outline, +colour, +fur, +mosaic – interestingly there was only one cheetah mosaic to be found, a Byzantine marble mosaic. Then images saved into folder, the images printed off 4 to an A4 page for inspiration, details.

I looked at many pictures of Australian fur seals, I picked the brains of other mosaic artists on how to achieve the shading, and I looked at mosaics that had shading to see how they’d done it.
