Donna (mosaic artist) - I did enjoy working on this project.  I experienced some new learning curves, however.  One was helping my family create their mosaics.  Teaching them the specifics was very different from working alone.  I explained safety features like using goggles and how to cut glass, and gave them tips on the spacing and flow of their tesserae and applying glue.  Another new curve for me was working with vitreous glass.  I normally work as a pique assiette mosaic artist and use broken plates, stained glass, porcelain pieces, etc.  I also am not used to cutting the glass as small as I did for some of the mosaics, such as my 9yo son’s black racer snake and prefer working with larger pieces. Most of the mosaics I was working on or helping my family with fit on a piece of mesh about the size of a standard 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper.   I normally work on something with more area, such as a table top, thus found this small footprint challenging.  Another learning curve was creating wildlife creatures.  My experience with mosaic art has been creating abstract or patterned designs for furniture pieces and home accessories.  I found it very challenging to look at these mosaics and try to create a recognizable creature.   The butterfly and squirrel were fun to create because they are creatures that I really enjoy seeing.  The elephant was fun, because it was inspired by my youngest child and its design and cheerful colors remind me of his playful personality.

John (husband)- Absolutely! Aren't butterflies way cool! They're like little blips of color, randomly traveling through our world.

Seth (19yo) - Yes, it was fun.  It was tricky to get the hang of, but once I got going it was fun thinking about how different shapes and colors would affect the way the outcome would look.

Laryssa (17yo) - Yes.  Because I’ve never tried it before.

Cory (12yo) - Yes. I don't really know why.  It's just fun.  Kinda like doing a very hard puzzle.

Shane (9yo) - Yes.  I'm not sure why, though.

I did enjoy making the mosaic, it was fun playing with the shading and the mosaic sort of flowed, at the time of making it, it gave me something to focus on, and forget the everyday things.
