I thought it is a great opportunity to do a few mosaics I wouldn’t normally do and also to be part of a fantastic group mural with so much different input from all over the world for the entire world to see.  Also the passion and compassion that as a group we seem to share.

Donna - I have 5 children who I have always home schooled.  My oldest is 19 and my youngest is 4.  We have been watching Steve, aka “The Crocodile Hunter” since he first started appearing on television.  He has been a major part of my children’s science.  He made us laugh, he made us gasp, he made us sit on the edge of our seats.   He inspired many family discussions.  When I heard of his tragic death, I felt like our family had lost a friend.  My heart was so heavy and I felt such sadness for his family…for Australia…for my kids.   We cried and mourned along with thousands of others as we watched the televised memorial.  As a mosaic artist, when I heard a mosaic mural was being created in honor and in memory of him, I knew immediately I wanted to participate.   I still hear Steve’s voice in my home on a regular basis as my kids watch reruns of his shows.  He is very much alive for us in many ways and his contribution to our family’s understanding of wildlife & all the great topics we discussed due to him will always mean very much to me.

John (husband) –I have a deep appreciation for Steve’s work. He had a wonderful gift to draw us all into his world through his great enthusiasm. Thank Steve and family, and crew.

Seth (19yo) – Because I wanted to honor Steve Irwin.  He meant a lot to me growing up.

Laryssa (17yo) – Because I love flamingos.

Cory (12yo) - Cuz I love to watch the show and I was sad when Steve died, so I thought it would be nice to make one.

Shane (9yo) - Because I wanted to.

The first reason is because Sandy’s fabulous mosaics are what inspired me to try making hand at mosaics.  Australia has a special place in my heart and the loss of Steve Irwin was so tragic.  He gave so much enjoyment to so many and it’s a privilege to make something in his honor.

It touches my heart that something so grand is being done to honor someone as awesome as Steve.  I want to be a part of it.

This dolphin is my second contribution to this awesome act of respect and honor to Steve Irwin.  I wanted to help towards this huge effort.

I made these two mosaics as an apology to Steve Irwin. When I lived in Australia and watched him on television I was embarrassed to think he represented Australia. His crazy antics and “crikey” would send me off the edge. It wasn’t until his death that I found out he and his family are such active and passionate environmentalists and I felt ashamed of myself for my previous thoughts and feelings for the Irwin family. Hence the mosaics and my wish to contribute to such a great memorial.

As a means of acknowledging Steve Irwin, who was one of those amazing people who shared his passion for the animals that we share our world with, and was able to share his joy and fascination with all types of animals with us. Also to be a small part of a worldwide recognition of this man.

Carolyn - I want to honor Steve's lifelong dedication to wildlife around the world, particularly to promoting the concept of the apex predator/umbrella species, whether crocodile or cougar. I also want to honor Terri's own work, including her work in Oregon, and her contribution to their work together, and to honor her relationships with Steve and with Malina.

Anna - Well, my mother was making a mosaic of Malina and I was thinking about doing one but not really acting on it until I saw a 9 y.o.'s mosaic of a cheetah and that really jump-started me.

I loved the idea of participating in a community mural.

We love Steve Irwin’s work and admire his dedication to saving our wildlife.

We were saddened by his passing.

My two sons think it’s a wonderful idea because they see this as increasing their chances of visiting the Australia Zoo one day.

This is my way of saying thanks to Steve Erwin’s family for all the wonderful   documentaries and real life stories that my family has had the privilege to watch over the years. My five grandchildren all have    Steve’s khaki shorts and shirts and live by his beliefs and love of all things in the wild.

I liked the idea of people all over the world coming together to pay tribute to a man who brought wildlife right into our homes.  I couldn’t go to Australia to do something.  Sending money doesn’t seem all that meaningful.  But, by doing a mosaic, I could contribute something tangible.

We love animals of all kinds. I’m concerned about our environment and the dwindling population of creatures, and I think what Steve Irwin was doing was incredibly important. We’re all very exited that we can make something and send it halfway around the world to be displayed in Australia Zoo. More than anything we all love Steve Irwin and his family.

We don’t watch television at pre-school, however on some rainy days, we do watch Disney movies and Steve Irwin’s Nature series, only. Hearing of Steve’s death deeply saddened me and I knew that the children will hear of this great loss. I wanted to address his passing and be ready to answer questions, as they knew that he was a daddy to two children, their age. I made this with the children in my class – ages 2yrs. – 5yrs old.

I heard that there was going to be a mural made and I wanted the children to have the experience of participating in this assembly of art from around the world to pay tribute to Steve. In this way they learned an incredible lesson as each one asked if they could take the mosaic home when it was completed. This was big, and an unforeseen lesson.  They learned about: giving.

We were honoured to have some involvement (albeit very amateurish) in a project to memorialize Steve Irwin and his passionate, unwavering drive to educate the world about nature conservation and living in harmony with our earth and its creatures. Our contribution pieces were on behalf of Laticrete who supplied the adhesives for the work.
