Lisa C Roussel created a blog entry Giving back ......

Many people who have met me in my life have thought I was just a bit odd. As an adult I have grown into my own skin well & have learned to love me , no matter what others think . I am a very spiritual person , and I do believe beyond that in ... what some might call fate , or kismet . Bear with me on this post, in the end it does come back to mosaics !
I purchased a home 5 years ago. The real estate agent was quick to tell me it did not show well. But in looking through it I saw good bones with many simple renovations to be done. I also saw a cross hanging on a wall in every room . To me this was a sign that my late grandfather (who was a minister) was telling me this was for me.
Approximately 2 years & 1 month ago my mother died of leukemia ( a form of blood cancer) . Now my mothers death seemed to start my world spinning.  A month later my grandson Preston was born . After Preston came into my care I lost my job & could no longer afford daycare that was previously paid by child services.  I awoke 1 Sunday morning to feeling a huge desire filling my heart to goto church. I had not been in over 10 years. I went to a newer church closest to my home & found myself welcomed among many lovely people who would become my friends & family. There was another connection though ...upon my grandfathers death , and the minister of my new church had received a gift of some of my grandfathers robes .

I recieved an inheritance from my grandfathers will after my mothers death. I started to renovate my home on a very tight budget, with the plan to move back to the city that is the home of my heart . My house sold, the move is completed, although i am still unpacking. I now find myself swirling in plans my mind is running nonstop as the excitement builds towards the opening of this business.
So I am now gearing up to live the life I have been dreaming of for 6 years now ! None of this could be possible without the gift from my grandfather, & yet at the same point my heart still aches softly for the loss of my mom . I have decided to give back , or pass it forward. One of the substrates I will be offering is a ribbon placque ... to use in the "Find a Cure - Mixed Media Pink Ribbon Mosaic Art Class" . I am creating / finding / ordering some custom made tesserae that is going to be the most beautiful blends of pinks & textures !  From each student taking this class I will be donating $10.00 towards the Cancer research foundation.

You have a good heart Lisa. When you give out you give yourself a gift too. Good luck with the project.

What an amazing story and the Ribbon Plaque idea is fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing it, and I look forward to hearing more in the future.

I've glued a metal fork in a mosaic using Cement based adhesive. Intially Tile All from Bunnings but

What is the metal type?
Jo Garner on Sunday, 05 September 2010 18:23

Thanks Sandy and Caroline - I have Tile All, will check it out. Also have liquid nails. I will take a photo and post it a.s.a.p. Jo

Sandy Robertson - OzMosaics on Sunday, 05 September 2010 17:04

Firstly, I would "key" (scratch up for grip) the area on the glazed ceramic base that is to receive the metal tesserae. Glue - consider liquid nails (there is one for metal to glass) or epoxy. I have asked Laticrete to confirm if thinset is adequate. I would try it, but I will share the answer when I hear from them. Do you have a photo?

Jo Garner on Sunday, 05 September 2010 16:39

Not sure. They are from a candle holder, pretty light - steel probably.

04:33 PM
What adhesive would be best for an exterior application of metal onto highly glazed ceramic substrat

Jo Garner created a blog entry Inspiration - where ...

Well my girlfriend loved her mosaic - so that's good, and to top off a good night, she gave me an early birthday present too.  She is a ceramic artist and had made 3 chubby,  highly glazed birds on metal sticks for the garden - so gorgeous!
Father's Day is here and he is off with our son (10) playing golf, so thought I would head into the studio.  But, what to do?  I have a china totem pole thingy that I am gradually gluing together, but can't do anything else on that for now.  I do have a table that I need to sand off and paint, ready to mosaic, but that's not exciting me either....
Might need to go and have a cup of tea, listen to Annie Lennox and have a good long think!

Sandy Robertson - OzMosaics on Thursday, 09 September 2010 17:07

I love the photos in the blog you wrote - keep 'em coming!

Sandy Robertson - OzMosaics on Thursday, 09 September 2010 00:36

Jo, I am so thrilled your girlfriend loved her mosaic and it must have been great to know she appreciated your mosaic.

Christine McKenzie HI all, finally got onto the arena site -been round in a few circles realised I had to keep same user name and password from joining some previous sites set up by Sandy - it looks like the membership i paid when in Oz last year is still valid. So here's hoping I can navigate and contribute. Need to get someone to get a reasonable photo of me to upload for my profile.
Sandy Robertson - OzMosaics on Sunday, 05 September 2010 12:48

Hi Christine! RE membership to CLUB mOz, all members are getting extended membership whilst I upgrade CLUB mOz. The 10% discount is applicable to CLUB mOz members in our mosaic shop, which is part of the CLUB mOz benefits. Lots to be revealed soon. The ARENA is free to registered members, ie I host the site and it's part of OzMosaics core site. The earthquake didn't look good! Hope you and friends are ok...amazing, these things just come out of the blue....

Migaloo is tidied up waiting his final fin work. Looks so sweet, a simple but happy whale. Seaweed is waiting for it's multi colouring - black, yellow and green to give depth and motion to the 3-D glass. A huge ball is on the workbench to show students some quirky things and well, I am looking forward to it.

Thanks to all who are participating in the ARENA. It's early days a a huge beautiful facelift is coming to the ARENA, very soon. The new template being released is just amazing, so thanks for your patience with a couple of little bugs in here.

As soon as it is available I will install it. The preview is so easy to use and navigate. So hang in there. Keep uploading your photos, update your avatars and profiles and I am loving the Blogs. Write an article/blog about anything you please, but about mosaics is very appropriate LOL!

However, if you have an interesting topic we want to join in! A wonderful new commenting system is coming for the blogs, so even if you are finding it a little overwhelming, it won't be soon!

Have a fabulous day, I have a workshop here tomorrow and need to get the dunnies in from the garden to show some processes.... I am running late as usual, but then again, does running late on one thing, mean you are running early on another?........
